Winnie

Winnie is a 2-4 year old spayed Beagle (working type). In her previous life, she suffered an injury to her front left leg and foot, which probably wasn’t treated properly at the time. We have investigated this and it’s not causing her any bother, although it looks pretty serious; it’s all healed up now. Although this probably meant she was no longer useful for work, it doesn’t slow Winnie down…not one bit!

When she first came to us, Winnie was very overwhelmed by the sudden change to her life. With some wonderful foster humans taking care of her, and our in-depth program of building resilience, Winnie has come a long long way. She has emerged from a shutdown, overwhelmed girlie to a bubbly, boisterous, mischievous, funny dog, who is super sweet and soft.

Winnie is an absolute delight to be with. She is friendly with humans and canines and is out-going, but not obnoxious. She loves her grub, and loves to explore, sniff, and most of all, to lie in the sun for hours on end.

One of the difficulties in placing dogs in companion homes, is making sure that their needs can be met so that the dog’s welfare is prioritised. We can’t just expect dogs to fit the mould we expect or want. Dogs have needs!

And Winnie, coming from a working background, won’t be able to work as her ancestors have, given her foot, but she still thinks she’s a working Beagle that needs a job. To make sure we can provide her with sufficient entertainment, Winnie will go to a home with another dog.

Winnie is a pretty lively and playful gal, so her new doggie-roommate will need to be relatively robust, pretty playful themselves, ideally male, and of similar age and size to Winnie. This also means that Winnie will require a secure garden at the house so she and her new pal can frolic and play to their hearts’ content.

Winnie requires plenty of exercise and entertainment and we feel that living with a playful pal will help provide some outlets for her behaviour too. She loves puzzles and will need continued enrichment in her new home too.

Winnie is very soft and tolerant of handling and interactions with humans. With people and in the house, Winnie is as sweet as can be; she adores her humans and wants to be with you, and snooze the day away close to you. Her alone training and confinement training have improved immensely and this must be continued when she moves to her new home.

She has excellent dog-dog social skills, but a getting-to-know-you period will be required so she and her new pal will be supported as they settle into life with one another, pre- and post-adoption.

She is full of fun and wants to explore and dig and sniff so her new home, while requiring a secure garden at the house, probably shouldn’t be too precious about the landscaping. And if there is a hole or a gap, Winnie will be in there exploring!

For a Beagle, she is very quiet and is not particularly vocal and although she loves her food, she’s not rude or grabby about getting to it.

Initially, so we can help her settle, her new home must have someone home and available most of the time. But over time and with continued work (and our support), Winnie will be able to spend short periods alone but will not be going to a home where the humans work full time, even working from home.

Winnie has pretty much had a crash course in being a companion dog and has made great strides. We will continue to support her in her new home, as she keeps on learning and progressing.

She has shown great improvements in car comfort (she’s not car-sick) and with loose leash walking…but really she just wants to get to beagling about when she’s out #sniffsniffsniff

Winnie is sweet and soft; she will make a fun and active companion and now she’s ready to move on in her journey.

Winnie is vaccinated, spayed and microchipped (972274200056504).

A home for Winnie:

  • doesn’t have other pets

  • must be home much of the time initially and works no more than part-time outside of that

  • has a great sense of humour and is ready to giggle at this girl’s antics

  • committed to ongoing work on loose leash walking, car comfort, alone & confinement training, with our continued support
